The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its monthly employment numbers. Although the U.S. job market has slowed in terms of growth, it remains strong. The unemployment rate changed little to 3.6% and 209,000 jobs were added in June (down from 339,000 jobs in May). Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% (12 cents). Most job gains were seen in government, health care, social assistance, and construction.
June’s added jobs figures were the lowest in 30 consecutive months since the gains began, marking a continued cooling of the labor market but with no true recession yet realized.
